Important notes for updating to the New Revere

Revere is undergoing a big upgrade in August 2024 which may affect some users.

Who this post is for

People who use Revere on iOS devices running iOS 16 or older; use Siri voice commands with Revere; use the Apple Watch app; or the Chrome Extension.

Things to know

Dropping of iOS 16 support

Devices running older versions of iOS will not upgrade to the New Revere. The App Store will set the maximum Revere version to 3.8.11 (the New Revere is version 4.0).

No syncing between old and new Revere versions

The New Revere (v4.0 and up) will not sync with the previous versions (v3.8.10 and below). This means notes added to the older version won't show on devices running the new version.

If you want to keep syncing with a device that can’t upgrade to the New Revere, do not update. You can find instructions on turning off your phone’s Auto Update at the bottom of this post.

Siri temporarily removed

Adding notes with Siri won’t initially be available in the New Revere but will be added back eventually.

Apple Watch temporarily removed

The new Revere won’t support Apple Watch at the start but support will be added back eventually.

Chrome Extension going away

The Chrome extension won’t work with the new Revere. The New Revere will be designed to work on your Mac.

More information about these changes here — Important note for users of Siri and Apple Watch.

Notes added to an older version of Revere on an older device (running iOS 16 or lower) won’t sync with the New Revere.

Devices with iOS 17 and the New Revere will sync normally.

Why is this happening

The New Revere is built on Apple’s newest programming language and frameworks. Making these work with those of the old Revere was too significant an effort for a small team and keeping compatibility going forward would delay new features too. I made the decision to focus all energy on the future.

For Siri and Apple Watch, I decided the New Revere was worth releasing sooner, rather than delaying until the Siri and Apple Watch functionality was ready.

Start of a new chapter for Revere

This new version of Revere represents a renewed commitment to the app. You can expect many more features, improvements, and a better day-to-day experience using the app in the future.

As always, I'm interested in your feedback. You can find links to get in touch on the Settings screen inside the app.

All the best,
